Mothers Union

Mothers Union

Mothers UnionMothers’ Union is an international Christian charity that seeks to support families worldwide. Its members are not all mothers or even all women, as there are many parents, men, widows, singles and grandparents involved in its work. Its main aim is to support marriage and family life, especially through times of adversity.

HISTORY : The organisation was founded by Mary Sumner in 1876 in the Church of England parish of Old Alresford, near Winchester, where her husband was rector. She was inspired to start the movement after the birth of her first grandchild. Remembering her own difficulties when she was first a mother, Sumner wanted to bring mothers of all social classes together to provide support for one another and to be trained in motherhood, something which she saw as a vocation.

As a global movement of women (and men), the Mothers' Union supports local churches with the prayers and activities of its branch members, local communities through social outreach projects and is an international campaigning charity. Particularly concerned with the plight of women in the world, its projects include literacy and development, parenting, micro finance and campaigning against violence against women and the trafficking of women.

Its vision is of a world where God's love is shown through loving, respectful, and flourishing relationships.

Its aim is to demonstrate the Christian faith in action by the transformation of communities worldwide through the nurture of the family in its many forms.

In order to carry out this aim, the Mothers' Union objectives are:

To uphold Christ's teaching on the nature of marriage and promote its wider understanding.
To encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the Church.
To maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service.
To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children.
To help those whose family life has met with adversity.

At a local level in Murgwanza is the headquarters for the Mothers Union branch for the Diocese of Kagera. Each parish has its own Mother’s Union Group that meets each week to study God’s word and to pray and encourage each other in their lives as mothers and wives running a household.

At a diocese level there is regular teaching to the various parishes throughout the year to teach the women mothercraft skills, cooking, farming, being a wife and a local leader. The local Mother’s Union groups support and encourage each other practically, spiritually and finincially as able. They provide a support to one another particularly in times of adversity, illness and when children are at risk.

In August 2012, Murgwanza will host its first Provincial Meeting in the history of Kagera. The meeting will be held over 5 days and involve approximately 150 Mother’s Union Members. Obviously this is a big event and very costly for the Kagera Branch of Mothers Union. Please pray for the organisers and that the financial needs will be met.
