Background

Kagera Solar Enterprise - Background

The diocese (established in 1985) has a long history of development work and currently runs a number of programs relating to health, education and poverty alleviation . These programs serve people of all faiths.

A recent addition is the Kagera Solar Enterprise, also known as Watu na Nuru (Light for the People), started on 1/7/2011. Watu na Nuru is made possible by a partnership between the diocese, the Grace Foundation in Melbourne (eg. providing loans for stock), and the Provincial Office of the Anglican Church of Tanzania in Dodoma (which imports large quantities of solar kits and acts as the wholesaler for Tanzania).

The solar kits are designed by Barefoot Power in Australia [www.barefootpower.com], and made under licence in China (using solar panels from Germany). Watu na Nuru in Kagera is managed by Andy Bennett (a CMS-Australia missionary [www.cms.org.au] working as the Development Consultant for the Diocese of Kagera), who is training Tanzanians to run the project. In 2012 four staff were employed to run the project: a project manager, two salespersons and a technician. In 2013 we hope to add some clerical support.
