The maternity unit is a 26 bed ward plus 4 newly acquired (in 2010) delivery beds. The maternity unit on average sees over 2000 deliveries per annum. This includes on average 150 deliveries from women who stayed in the waiting house. The waiting house provides free accommodation for these women and they provide their own food during their stay.

The paediatric ward is by far the busiest ward with the most admissions per year. Conversely it has the highest mortality rate. It consists of 58 beds divided into 4 rooms:

  1. A special care area for seriously ill children
  2. An infectious room
  3. A specific area for re-feeding malnourished children and infants
  4. The general paediatric area.

Adult wards are divided into female and male medical and surgical with about 25 beds in each. The female surgical ward has the highest number of admissions per year usually running on 118% occupancy rate.

There is a 3 bed intensive care unit which provides close supervision for seriously ill patients.

Other departments include two operating theatres, radiology, laboratory, pharmacy and infusion unit.

There are two Operating Rooms however only one is in use due to a lack of equipment for the second theatre. All clean procedures are done in the OT as well as major surgical interventions. On average, 700 major operations and over 2000 minor procedures are undertaken each year. Most common procedures include: caesarean sections, herniorraphy, salpingo-ophorectomy, bilateral tubal ligation and total abdominal hysterectomy.

The Pharmacy department deals with ordering, purchasing, distribution, dispensing and storage of drugs and medical supplies, equipment and laboratory reagents.

The infusion unit makes almost all types of infusion however if often lacks the raw materials needed to make such infusions.

The laboratory department has 6 sections which include Reception, Blood donation, haematology, parasitology, biochemistry and microbiology.

The radiology department is equipped with plain x-ray and simple ultrasound.

In 2009 a hospital canteen was opened, since there is no catering department for inpatients this allows family and friend to buy food for their loved ones. It is also open to staff and the general public. It is hoped the canteen will generate revenue for the hospitals struggling financial situation.
