Diocese Offices

The diocese of Kagera is one of the many dioceses of the Anglican Church of Tanzania. Kagera is located in the north-western part of Tanzania and borders Rwanda and Burundi to the west, Uganda to the north and Lake Victoria to the east.

The history of Christianity in this region goes back to the beginning of the last century when missionaries started work of evangelism, medical care and education. By 1930, a community of local believers was well established. The Church has had to weather various overwhelming disasters. Eruptions of civil war in neighbouring Rwanda resulted in massive influx of refugees who caused significant disruption to socio-economic life. The 1979 Tanzanian war of liberating Uganda demanded the heaviest toll on the Kagera region as the neighborouing province.

Additionally, HIV/AIDS pandemic, though widespread in the country, is compounded in this region by cross-border migrations on three fronts.

Over the years, Kagera diocese has enjoyed healthy relations with many external mission parters. A majority of these links, together with Tanzanian government partnership, have tended to direct financial, material and personnel assistance to Murgwanza hospital and its Primary Health Care programme. As a result, the diocese's health care services tend to operate as distinct entities.
